The Autumn 2017 George Borrow Bulletin is now out
(Series 2, No. 15) and members should have received their copy
during December 2017.
Those who have read Borrow’s Wild Wales will know of his admiration of the now-famous Welsh poet, Dafydd ap Gwilym, and of Borrow’s thoughts on just how love-struck the bard really was with Morfudd and Dyddgu. With the aid of modern translations and scholarly input Simon examines Dafydd’s ladies, his relationship with them, and what Borrow wrote.
A little plug from the William MacOubrey article: you can read William’s play Drake which is available at Project Gutenberg, his contribution to a vaccination debate at Marylebone, London, and, if you understand Latin, you might also try his student thesis on Jaundice. For background on his literary works, see the article.
We have an introduction to Jefferey Farnol, where Martin draws out how Borrow was a great inspiration to Farnol.
Mike has been further researching Borrow’s dingle (from Lavengro and Romany Rye) and has come up with a lot more fascinating facts that point toward the theory he started in the previous Bulletin. This has also led to a better understanding of why the Gipsies went to the church (in Romany Rye).
We’ve very pleased that Brian Bouchard has not only set our Website straight on ‘Gipsy Cooper’ but has turned up a picture of Charlotte Cooper, fights by famous men mentioned by Borrow and much more. You can read Brian’s original article on the Epsom and Ewell History Explorer website.
The Society always welcomes new members and if you’d like to join, please see the details on our Web page. We usually meet twice a year, visit places associated with Borrow, and have excellent talks. The Bulletin, as you can see, always contains a great deal of interest and is often commended for it’s high standard of research: to which thanks go to our beloved editor, Ann.
In addition to our Facebook group Trish has recently started a Twitter account: see the links on the left of the page for details.
