Portrait of George Borrow

Timelines

George Borrow (1803–1881) lived a very full and eventful life with many of the incidents being related in his works such as Lavengro and The Bible in Spain.  However, Borrow was deliberately vague when it came to dates: the incident is vivid, but often he gives no indication of when it happened.

To help we have a few timelines which put Borrow’s life in context, with dates.  More details are available in the various biographies of Borrow, with lots of excellent detailed work in The George Borrow Society Bulletin articles.

Firstly there’s a very brief year by year life of Borrow, with some historical context.

A considerable part of Borrow’s life is associated with Oulton, Suffolk, and our Oulton timeline covers this.  There’s little information on Oulton generally, and so our timeline includes background to the parish and also Lowestoft.

Between 1860 and 1874 George Borrow lived at 22 Hereford Square, Brompton, London.  We have a timeline of the residents of Hereford Square, so you can see who Borrow’s neighbours were and so on.  We're gradually developing a day by day story of the Brompton Area for this period.  So far we have 1860–64 with the remainder being gradually developed.  All of these years are experimental, will contain errors and are yet to be edited.

Brompton borders Kensington on the north, and our Kensington and Brompton timeline covers the area, including the history before 1860 when Borrow moved to Hereford Square.
