Book Group

Our online Book Group meet once a month for lively discussions of Borrow's works. Currently we are slowly working our way through Wild Wales, having finished reading The Bible in Spain last year. All are welcome - please email Michelle Zal if you are interested, and she will send you further details, including the date and time of the next meeting (it's usually on a Monday at 7:30 UK time), plus the text we will be discussing and the registration link for joining the Zoom meeting.

2025 Forthcoming Events

16th – 18th May 2025

The ALS (Association of Literary Societies) Annual Conference for 2025 will be hosted by the Kipling Society at the University of Sussex, Falmer, Brighton BN1 9RH The ALS Gathering and AGM – Alliance of Literary Societies. As the George Borrow Society belongs to ALS, our members are entitled to attend this programme of events, making their own arrangements for travel and accommodation. Saturday 26th July 2025

We will commemorate the 144th anniversary of George Borrow’s death by laying a wreath on his grave in Brompton Cemetery, London https://www.royalparks.org.uk/visit/parks/brompton-cemetery . You are welcome to bring a passage to read aloud at his graveside and to join us for light lunch at the North Lodge Cafe afterwards. The 2025 Biennial General Meeting of the George Borrow Society will take place online. In the mean time, please email Michelle Zal at michellemzal@gmail.com if there are any items that you would like to see on the agenda.

Saturday 6th December 2025

Provisional date for the George Borrow Society Christmas Meal – more detailed information will be given nearer the time. The viability of this event will depend on numbers, so please save the date and email Trish Gurney at patriciagurney@outlook.com if you are interested (or have any thoughts on good places in the UK for Borrovians to meet and eat in the run-up to Christmas!)
